Location Data

Ordnary builds software that lets teams manage knowledge, automate work, and run applications on our own cloud infrastructure. Location data plays a modest but concrete role in that: it helps us secure your account, set sensible defaults like language and time zone, and comply with regulations about where data may be processed.

Our Privacy Policy explains in general terms how Ordnary uses data, including location data. This page focuses specifically on which location data we use and how you can manage it.

How does Ordnary use location data?

How we use location data depends on the service you use and on your account and browser settings. These are the main ways Ordnary can use location data.

Improving functionality

We use a coarse location estimate, typically derived from your IP address, to pre-fill defaults for you, such as the language of our interface, your time zone, and the currency format on invoices. You can always adjust these defaults yourself in your account settings.

Security

We use location data to help protect your account. For example, if we see a sign-in from a country or region you haven't signed in from before, that can be a signal for extra verification or an email alert. This is the same kind of protection banks and other online services use to make account takeover harder.

Regulatory compliance and data residency

We host our services primarily in the European Union. For certain customers and services, we track which region data is processed in, so we can demonstrate compliance with applicable regulations on data transfers, as described in our Privacy Policy and the Data Processing Addendum.

Region settings in Ordnary Web Services

If you provision infrastructure through Ordnary Web Services, you choose which region your compute, storage, and networking run in. This isn't location data we infer about you, but an explicit setting you control and can change at any time, within the limits of what a service technically supports.

Analytics and product improvement

We use aggregated, coarse location data (typically no more precise than country or region) to understand where our services are used and to spot regional differences in performance or reliability. This analysis isn't aimed at identifying individual users.

How does Ordnary know my location?

Depending on the services you use and the settings you choose, Ordnary may use different types of location information to deliver and secure our services.

Based on your IP address

An IP address is a number your internet provider assigns to your device, used to connect your device to the services you use. IP addresses are roughly tied to a geographic region. Like most online services, we may use this coarse location for the purposes described above, such as security and setting defaults. We don't infer a precise location, such as a street address or coordinates, from your IP address.

Based on settings you choose yourself

In your account settings, you can set your own language, time zone, and, where applicable, the region for your Ordnary Web Services infrastructure. This data isn't an inferred location, but a deliberate choice you can adjust at any time.

From your browser or device

Some of our services read the time zone and language setting your browser reports, to display the interface correctly right away without you having to set it manually. Ordnary doesn't request access to your device's precise GPS location, and our services don't have map or navigation functionality that would require it.

How long does Ordnary retain location data?

Location data used for security purposes, such as recognizing an unusual sign-in, forms part of your session and sign-in history and is retained according to the timelines in our Privacy Policy under Retaining your data. Defaults you set yourself, such as language, time zone, and infrastructure region, remain until you change them or delete your account. Aggregated location statistics we use for analytics don't contain data that identifies you.

Location data and marketing

On our marketing sites, we use a coarse, IP-based estimate of your country to show content in the right language and to measure which regions visitors come from, as described in our Cookie Policy. We don't use this information to personalize advertising based on your precise location.

Your control

You can review and adjust your language, time zone, and, where applicable, your infrastructure region at any time in your account settings. You can also use your browser or device settings to control what information, such as time zone and language, is automatically shared with websites. Questions about how we use location data?
